Map Content
An important feature of Common Core’s curriculum maps is their attention to building students’ background knowledge of a diverse array of events, people, places, and ideas. Cognitive science has demonstrated that students read better if they know something about the subject they are reading about, so Common Core incorporated into its maps themes, texts, and activities that teach students about “The Great Big World,” as one of our Kindergarten maps is called. The content cloud below distills the key content knowledge in our maps. You can also link to clouds that are specific to each grade span (Elementary, Middle, and High). The larger an event, name, or idea appears, the more emphasis it receives in our maps. As you examine these clouds, do keep in mind that our maps contain much that is not included here.
