Fractions (Number Line and Area Model)
The number line is used to develop a deeper understanding of whole number units, fraction units, measurement units, decimals, and negative numbers. Throughout Grades K-5, the number line models measuring units.
In Grade 5, the foundational Grade 4 standards addressing equivalence are revisited. When equivalent, fractions represent the same amount of area of a rectangle, the same point on the number line. Students move forward to see that fraction addition and subtraction is analogous to whole number addition and subtraction. Students add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (5.NF.1) by replacing different fractional units with an equivalent fraction or like unit. Here we see how the area model is used to add fractions with unlike denominators, multiply a fraction times a whole number and a fraction times a fractions.
